Saint Michael's is a New York State - Department of Health certified residential adult care facility under the aegis of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The Home is housed in a three-story brick structure which complies with the strict regulations not only of the local Building Department, but also the stringent requirements of the New York Department of Health.

Overall, the programs and services of St. Michael's are specifically designed for those individuals who may have decreased powers of mobility and/or mental awareness. While not certified as such, the Home does offer a level of "assisted living" in a Greek Orthodox environment and the staff assists those who need help with certain duties such as bathing, dressing, etc. At all times, every effort is made to maintain the physical and intellectual integrity of the residents while encouraging them to preserve their independence and dignity.

Located in a bucolic residential neighborhood of Yonkers (a city bordering New York City to the north), the facility encompasses: furnished private and semi-private bedrooms; a beautiful dining room; a magnificent chapel where regular services are conducted; a modern medical facility; a large recreation hall; an airy T.V. room; a fully equipped beauty salon; a resplendent patio and garden where the resident, can enjoy the outdoors and other accommodations needed for the quality care of its residents.

Because of it classification as an "adult home", St. Michael's is not permitted to accept nor keep any resident who is not ambulatory or who may require continuous medical or skilled nursing care. The Home is visited twice a week by geriatric specialists and other medical technicians but also has on duty at all times, personnel certified in first aid to not only oversee the daily distribution of medicines but also to monitor the general health of all residents. St. Michael's is located in close proximity to several hospitals and other medical facilities for those needing emergency care.

ACCOMODATIONS

The Home is located in a bucolic suburb north of New York City (about 20 minutes from the heart of Manhattan) and the three-level building encompasses: private and semi-private bedrooms accommodating almost 60 senior citizens; a magnificent chapel which comfortably seats 70 people; a beautiful dining room with french doors leading onto a patio; a modern medical room; a spacious social/recreation hall; a beauty salon; an arts and crafts room and other accommodations needed for the quality care of residents. Three balanced meals (and two snacks) are provided as well as all furnishings (twin size bed, free-standing closet, four drawer dresser, night stand, lamp) and linens and towels. All rooms are equipped with a "call button" should a resident need immediate assistance, and the facility contains a state-of-the-art WanderGuard system which alerts the staff should any "unauthorized" resident exit the facility.

St. Michael's strives to maintain the independence and dignity of its residents who may have reduced powers of mobility or of mental awareness. All able residents have complete freedom to come and go as they please and the Home encourages all residents to maintain their normal relationships with family and friends.

MEDICAL ATTENTION

The Home is visited weekly by 2 geriatrics specialists (who are on-call at all times for emergencies) a podiatrist, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist, and on a regular basis by a dermatologist, optometrist and other specialists. A certified nutritionist monthly reviews menus to assure that the dietary needs of residents are more than being met but also to give directives regarding special diets (low-salt, etc). To accommodate the elderly, arrangements have been made with the appropriate providers to perform various medical procedures (blood test, x-rays, EKG's, etc.) in-house. Locate in close proximity to St. Michael's are a number of medical facility such as St. Joseph's Hospital, should the need arise. The Home also assumes the responsibility of ordering all prescribed medications. In addition, a licensed physical therapist conducts two weekly 45-minute exercise sessions with all residents.

RECREATION PROGRAM

A full-time Recreation Coordinator coordinates a holistic program of recreational activities which seek to challenge the resident both physically and intellectually so as to impede the aging process. Weekly outings in the Home's mini-bus are scheduled to outside venues such as to the Elmsford Dinner Theatre, shopping malls, museums, area parishes, local restaurants, and other points of interest which encourage interaction with the greater community.
