Peacefully situated in the quaint hamlet of Roxbury, Kirkside is a retirement residence with unique character. The main house is one the oldest in a community steeped in history. Both inside and outside, Kirkside maintains much of the charm inherent in its 1865 origins. In fact, the building has earned a designation in the National Historic Registry. Features such as built-in armoires, window seats, parquet floors and lost of sunshine from a multitude of windows all combine to make a cheerful, comfortable environment. Of course, along with the charm, Kirkside still meets all of the requirements mandated by the New york State Department of Social Services by which it is licensed and regulated.

Outside, the grounds of Kirkside can best be described as "park-like." Benches, a small stream and flower gardens all are featured on the nearly two acres of Kirkside property. The entire setting is in the middle of the hamlet of Roxbury, private, yet an easy walk to stores, small restaurants, a public library and three churches. Add these features to the friendliness of a small, rural community and the attractiveness of Kirkside as a retirement residence is immediately apparent.

Kirkside is not a healthcare facility. There is 24-hour, on-site supervision. We assist residents with medication administration, ordering and pick-up. In addition, we provide access to their physician for emergencies.

Roxbury is also the site of The Roxbury Family Health Center that provides medical coverage — on a weekday basis. The community has its own volunteer emergency squad and Margaretville Memorial Hospital is located within 15 minutes' drive. Kirkside provides transportation for medical, eye and dental visits.

Support staff, such as a full-time administrator, activities and maintenance personnel are also on duty. Services offered at Kirkside include light housekeeping, laundry, assistance with personal care and recreational activities.

Accommodations

Rooms can come furnished, although residents are welcome to provide their own belongings. Most rooms have private bathrooms.

Public areas for use by residents include a large, elegant living room, a library/sitting room, two dining rooms, a picturesque front porch and Kirkside's spacious yards.

Activities

The residents at Kirkside are encouraged to maintain individual lifestyles. Everyone is free to come and go as they please. Of course, there's no shortage of things to do right at home. Bird watching, sitting by the stream out back or just a stroll around the manicured Kirkside grounds are pastimes that many residents enjoy. There's always something special to do inside, as well. The five-day-a-week activity schedule includes an exercise program, concerts, rides, arts and crafts. To help ensure that the needs of all residents are being met, a Residents' Council assists with policy-making, procedures and activity scheduling.

Many Kirkside residents also enjoy becoming involved in the Roxbury community. Church groups and senior clubs are among the organizations that have traditionally welcomed Kirkside residents. For those with a taste for music and crafts, from spring through fall, Roxbury is host to a variety of arts-oriented events with a rural focus.

Dining

Kirkside residents are provided with three meals daily, with the large meal being served at noon-time. Each meal is planned by a licensed nutritionist and offers three physician-prescribed diets. They are low sodium 2gm., regular liberalized, and a Consistent Carbohydrate Diet (diabetic). Meals are served "family-style" in the dining room. Friends and relatives are always welcome to join residents at mealtime. Guests are charged a nominal fee to offset the cost of their meal.
